With 2019 just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to come up with some writing goals!
A new year is like a clean slate, a time during which so many people start making changes for the better. While any time of year is a good time to make a goal, there’s nothing quite like the fresh start of a new year.
It can be difficult to make writing goals though, and it’s even more difficult to stick to them, so here’s a five step process for making writing goals that you can accomplish:
1. Create a List of Things You Would Love to Accomplish
Get a pen and a piece of paper, or open up a word processing program, and start making a list of all the writing tasks you would love to accomplish.
It doesn’t matter if you think you can’t do them, write them down anyway.
Go wild with this list, and write down everything that you’d love to be able to, every project that would give you immense joy to complete.
2. Create a List of Things You Should Accomplish
Next, create a list of the writing tasks or goals that you should accomplish. Maybe they’re not very interesting, or would be a pain to write, but are things that you should do.
If you’re fortunate, some of the items on this list may also be on the previous list you made, as a writing task that you’d love to do.
But some of the items on this list will probably be a bit more tedious. Perhaps you’ve let your blogging schedule slip, and you need to consistently write and edit posts again. While writing a blog post or two every week may get tiring, if you’ve said you’re going to be posting every week, then you should post every week.
3. Create a List of Things You Could Accomplish
The third step is to create a list of all the writing goals or tasks you could accomplish within a year.
It doesn’t matter if the writing task isn’t on either of your other lists. If you think you can reasonably do it in the course of twelve months, add it to the list.
Don’t overthink things when creating this list, just go with what comes to mind. You can refine things after you have a good list going.
Even if you would never actually do all the writing projects you could do, writing them down anyways will get the gears in your brain turning, and you may find a project that you could do and would love to do!
4. Cross-Reference Your Lists
After you’ve made all three lists, it’s time to cross-reference them to see if any goals or tasks come up on more than one list.
If any item is on your ‘should’ list and your ‘could’ list, then you should make it a writing goal for the new year. Same thing goes for items that are both on your ‘love to’ list and ‘could’ list.
Now, what happens when you have an item on both your ‘should’ list and your ‘love to’ list, but not on your ‘could’ list? Think about why you can’t possibly accomplish it in a year, and try to see if you can find a workaround.
If there’s no way you could possible accomplish that task in a year, how about doing part of that task over the year? After all, dividing seemingly impossible tasks into smaller, more manageable parts is a great way to get things done.
5. Create Action Plans
Now that you have all of your goals chosen after cross-referencing your lists, it’s time to create action plans for them.
Completing tasks over long periods of time can be difficult if you don’t have a plan for how you’re going to complete them, so sit down and begin working on a schedule.
Plus, having a schedule in place will help prevent you from forgetting about the goals that you made for yourself.
